What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of head injury that occurs when there is direct or indirect trauma to the head. This can include a direct blow to the head, or neck and/or when the body comes to a sudden stop after a quick movement. Common events that can cause a concussion include, bumping heads with another individual, hitting a head off the floor, being hit by an object in the head, and whiplash of the neck.

A concussion will typically result in a rapid onset of symptoms such as:

  • A lasting headache
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Decreased balance
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Increased irritability
  • Emotional instability
  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating on tasks
  • Visual disturbances

Who’s at Risk?

Concussions are highly prevalent in the general population and are not solely limited to sports. There are several other instances that put individuals at a high risk for concussions. These include, but are not limited to, school, motor vehicle accidents, recreational activities, war etc.

Concussion research has expanded significantly over the past decade. These results have shown us the tremendous importance of rehab for individuals who experience a concussion. Implementation of treatment strategies shortly after a concussion has shown improvements in recovery and a faster return to daily activities. It is important that as soon as a suspected concussion occurs that one seeks out medical evaluation by a professional.

State of the Art Technology

With our CCMI certification, we have access to several technologies that allow us to determine cognitive and functional baselines, track the occurrence of concussions, track concussion recovery, and to connect with our clients, teams, coaches, and trainers.

  1. CCMI Smartphone App

The Concussion Tracker App supports seamless communication between sports, schools, parents and healthcare practitioners, which keeps everyone up to date when a concussion occurs. Download the app here.

  1. Baseline Testing Program

The baseline testing resources through CCMI allow us to determine an athlete’s neurocognitive and functional baseline, so we can actively compare results after a concussion occurs.

  1. Rehab and Exercise Equipment

We use a variety of equipment to aid in optimal exercise performance such as treadmills, stationary bikes, weight rack, dumbbells, kettlebells, and a Keiserâ„¢ pneumatic air cables.

What Will We Help With?

Just because a concussion hasn’t occurred yet, doesn’t mean that nothing can be done. Concussion baseline testing allows us to keep a record of one’s neurocognitive and functional baseline to offer a timely and accessible comparison once a concussion occurs. Baseline tests are used optimally for those at a greater risk of concussion such as kids in sports and attending school, those in recreational sports, as well as high level and professional athletes.

After a concussion occurs, first and foremost, our initial goal will ALWAYS be to rule out any serious or sinister pathology and if referral to a medical doctor is in order. From there our goal is to get a better idea of the symptoms you may be experiencing, determine the cause, determine exercise tolerance, and create an individualized treatment plan that will help you return to sport, learning, work, and/or daily activities.

Our treatment methods include progressive cardiovascular, strength, and balance/proprioception focused exercise, manual and manipulative therapy, electro-acupuncture, cervical spine, and visual/vestibulo-occular reflex training.
