ORTHOTICS IN AJAX & PICKERING

Custom orthotics are particular heel or shoe inserts prescribed by a doctor. They may be prescribed to treat leg, foot and back problems. Orthotics are typically part of a comprehensive treatment plan which addresses a range of symptoms mostly related to discomfort and pain of the legs and foot. Some of the main goals doctors may have when prescribing orthotics are to correct foot deformities, help the ankle or foot function better, provide additional support to the ankle and reduce the risk for further injuries. Orthotics are more than shoe inserts or heel pads that you can purchase at the local athletic stores. They are heel or shoe inserts custom-made specifically for you. An orthotic will be prescribed if other treatments and off-the-shelf devices have proven to be ineffective in treating your condition. A physical examination focuses on deformities and the parts of the foot that are painful. You may be asked to perform activities like walking. Special imaging or pad can be used. Traditional imaging of the feet such as bone scan, MRI and X-ray may also be recommended to identify areas of injury, damage or arthritis. Custom orthotics can be used to treat a range of medical conditions, including arthritis, bunions, back pain, bursitis, flat feet, hammertoes, diabetes, heel spurs, high arches, plantar fasciitis and injuries. Doctors recommend the use of orthotics together with other treatments, such as the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Orthotics work by offering support and cushioning to the key areas of the feet. The use of orthotics can help avoid invasive treatments such as surgery.

Custom orthotics are prescribed by a doctor and require a careful in-person assessment before a prescription is given. Your doctor will perform a complete assessment which includes but is not limited to the following.

Medical History To better understand the issue, the doctor will review every aspect of your medical history that is specific to your ankle and foot. A patient’s gender, age, recreational activities and occupation also offer a foundation to the doctor. While pain is the primary complaint most people have, the doctor will check for the main concerns, which may include deformity, instability, swelling and stiffness.

Inspection and Observation Lower limb biomechanics and foot structure are examined thoroughly during weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing evaluations. The doctor will inspect your shoe wear because improper shoe wear and shoe size have been known to cause discomfort.

Gait Analysis This involves observing a patient as they walk. The aim is to identify unusual patterns or functions that result from abnormal lower limb or foot structure. Every phase of the gait cycle will be analyzed for irregularities and asymmetries of right to left. All the information gathered during a clinical assessment is considered to determine whether the medical problem is caused by foot alignment or foot structure. The assessment also helps the doctor determine if foot orthosis, footwear, or footwear modification will be appropriate.

At The Center for Physical Health, we take clinical gait analysis to a whole new level. We achieve this by relying on an advanced high-speed digital gait analysis system. The system gives both our patients and practitioners a better understanding of the condition that is being diagnosed.

The PediGait High-Speed Gait Analysis System works by filming you as you walk or run on a treadmill. It films you from the front, back and either side. Our team then plays back the recording on a high-definition television to evaluate your gait from all angles. We are able to slow down the video to watch everything frame by frame. This enables us to see your gait in complete detail. This feature is also great when comparing multiple video captures like running or walking barefoot, with shoes or while wearing orthotics. The video gait analysis helps our team provide you with direct visual feedback and clarifies why you experience pain in the back, hip, knee, shin, ankle, or foot.

We are happy to provide you with a video file of the analysis for other professionals that are involved in your care, for insurance purposes or your own use.

Pressure mapping has come a long way since the days of using Electrodynogram (EDG) systems more than 30 years ago. The EDG system required sensors to be placed under the medical and lateral heel, first & fifth metatarsophalangeal joints and the hallux. Modern-day systems use a full insole width and length device, which shows the pressure of the whole foot. Pressure mapping enables the doctor to quantify several things, including the location of the high pressures, overall timing or the duration of the high pressures, as well as the center of pressure. The study of all these factors helps provide indications if the foot is functioning in a manner that is not ideal and can be associated with a specific type of foot diagnosis and symptoms. The study also helps determine if a custom or customized orthotic or a shoe can help reduce the indicators of poor function. Pressure mapping devices do more than just give readings about pressure. When evaluating a foot problem, timing is crucial. Pressure sensor systems give the doctor the ability to look at the force versus the time curves. Combining the two provides a unique perspective into how the ankle and footwork from the heel contact all the way to the toe-off.

Features:

  • Displays pressure profiles of normal, flat & high arch feet for comparison
  • Displays 2D & 3D pressure profiles
  • Records foot type and regions with high pressure
  • Shows percentage of weight distribution when standing
    • Left foot vs. Right footHome
    • Forefoot vs. Rearfoot
  • Shows foot measurement
  • Displays center of foot progression in motion
  • Measures foot pressure distribution in motion and in stationary positions

Custom Orthotics for Heel Pain

Heel pain can occur due to aging, poor foot mechanics, excess weight, low activity levels, or improper footwear. If you’re suffering from mild or severe heel pain, we can help recommend a custom-made foot orthotic that is perfectly designed for you. With the right orthotic, you can begin the healing process and prevent a range of recurrent problems. Heel pain can occur due to poor foot posture or excess ankle motion when walking. We will take time to assess your heel movements when walking, standing, and running in order to better understand the issue at hand.

Symptoms like pain and swelling at the arch or bottom of the heel could signify a condition known as plantar fasciitis that is caused by inflammation and irritation of the fibrous tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. The pain can get worse with the first few steps you take when you wake up in the morning or after sitting for long periods. Heel pain can also occur due to some sort of trauma. Our custom orthotics can help address issues like tenderness at the back of the heel, swelling, or pain on the ankle when standing on toes.

Custom Orthotics for Forefoot Pain

A foot is made up of metatarsal bones which are five in number and run from the arch of the foot to the toe joints. Pain, burning, or discomfort on these metatarsal bones can disrupt your day to day mobility. Our custom orthotics can be prescribed to help address these symptoms. Forefoot pain can be caused by intense activities, foot trauma, certain foot types like high arches as well as excessive weight. Individuals with arthritis and foot deformities are also more likely to suffer from forefoot pain.

Some of the most common forefoot conditions that we’ve treated include bunions, hallux valgus deformity (when the big toe shifts towards the smaller toes), and metatarsal stress fractures. Some foot conditions occur due to lack of blood supply and custom orthotics can help fix this issue. If you are experiencing forefoot pain, speak to us today. We can guide you on proper shoe selection as well as custom orthotics to alleviate pain, soreness, and discomfort.

Custom Orthotics for Diabetes

Diabetes can affect the feet and lower limbs. It is a chronic condition that limits blood flow to the limbs and feet. Due to poor blood flow, diabetics can suffer serious complications from minor injuries like cuts and blisters because their bodies don’t heal as fast. Orthotics can be used to help manage the symptoms of diabetes in your feet. With proper advice given by our foot specialist, you can prevent foot complications caused by diabetes.

These specialized devices will help in correction and control of the high pressure, friction, or shear on different areas of your foot. The custom orthotics will be manufactured specifically for you using a cast of your foot. All orthotics are designed using high-quality materials. We match the orthotics to your specific needs and comfort. We consider factors such as your activity level, occupation, and footwear when designing your orthotics. Speak to us today if you’re suffering from foot complications as a result of diabetes.

Custom Orthotics for Knee Pain

Knee pain can occur due to sudden trauma or an underlying condition like arthritis. If you’re suffering from knee pain, we will perform thorough examinations to understand the underlying cause and offer the right treatment. Our custom orthotics can also be used for people with mild and severe knee pain. We can design soft and accommodative orthotics for you to help alleviate knee pain.

Our chiropractors will recommend a combination of different techniques to help reduce inflammation around the knee joint and restore the knee’s range of motion. If there are alignment issues in other areas of your body which are contributing to the knee pain, our chiropractor can use techniques like compression, strengthening exercises, elevation, and custom orthotics. Our goal is to help you restore balanced function not only on the knees but in the entire body. We don’t just help you reduce pain and inflammation in the irritated tissues, we also offer a combination of chiropractic care and orthotics to restore your overall wellbeing.

Custom Orthotics for Back Pain

One of the most common complaints for adults from all walks of life is back pain. Back pain can be experienced by people who sit at their office desk all day, those who stand for long hours as well as those who are involved in more physical labour. The back is made up of intervertebral discs, vertebrae, ligaments, and muscles. All parts of the body are somewhat connected to the back. This means that any imbalance on a different part of your body can cause serious back pain.

Orthotics can be used as a holistic approach to prevent and alleviate back pain. Orthotic shoes and shoe inserts can be used to address imperfections in foot structure and restore alignment on the spine. Structural concerns on your foot can cause problems on your back and this is where custom orthotics can come in. Since your feet serve as a foundation for the rest of the body, any imperfections in this area will have a negative toll on areas such as your back. We can use orthotics to help reduce these kinds of symptoms and restore a more efficient and coordinated motion.
